The Magic of Movement (Studio and home based programme)

There is one thing that each and every one of us has in common, we are all getting older. We can’t change our chronological age (the number of years we have lived) but much can be done to improve our functional age (how well we are and our ability to enjoy life to the full as we age).

As well as the many benefits that come with age there can be some down sides, one of which being the loss of muscle tissue, particularly the main muscle groups of the lower body.  Over time, this not only effects our ability to balance but also reduces functional fitness which is what is needed to maintain an independent lifestyle – enabling us to get out of the chair (and up from the floor!) with ease, to walk up stairs and maintain a balanced, upright posture.

At any age, inactive lifestyles have been shown to be associated with a decline in functional capacity which is even more marked in older, inactive people.  The old adage is very true ‘Use it or lose it’! On the plus side, our bodies have the ability to build lean muscle tissue well into our 90’s and beyond, so it is never too late!

The Magic of Movement is a unique exercise programme designed for the older adult who is aware that their loss of balance and muscular strength is starting to effect their posture and functional fitness.

Informed by the evidence based FaME falls prevention programme and the Otago strength and balance programme, clients will be given the skills and knowledge to perform specific exercises both in class and at home in order to improve strength and balance.

The programme is an 8 week course and is designed to be ongoing in order to continue to reap the benefits of the exercises, increasing resistance and challenge as improvements are made, ultimately learning to get down onto the floor to do some floor exercises and get up again with confidence.

This requires client commitment and self discipline as exercises must be performed at home as well as in the weekly studio sessions in order to get results.  Ankle weights and resistance bands will be provided for home use, a deposit of £40 will be required which will be refunded if client leaves the programme and all equipment is returned in good condition.

If you are serious about improving your functional fitness, posture, balance and strength and you have the self discipline required then this programme could be for you! Please be aware that in order to get to the studio there is a set of stairs to climb so you must be able to manage the stairs and once there….it could be your first step to a stronger you!!

Studio Sessions – Thursday afternoons – 3.00 – 4.15 (1hr 15mins)

Sessions will be limited to 5 clients max and the programme comprises a block of 8 weekly sessions.  This enables client-focused sessions and ensures, as far as possible, a ‘bubbled’ and covid-secure environment for all. Regretfully, if all 5 spaces are not fully booked, it will not be feasible to run the course)

Initial block of 8 sessions £125 (this includes a 1 hour 1-2-1 assessment to either be done in the clients home or at The Broad Street Practice)

Ongoing blocks of 8 sessions £100

Payment for the whole programme block is to be made in full at the time of booking and there are no refunds or substitute sessions for sessions missed. If client is found to be unsuitable for the programme after initial assessment a full refund will be given. All clients must complete required paperwork which will be forwarded for completion prior to the 1-2-1 assessment appointment.
