The Magic of Movement – or Otago Plus….
There is one thing that each and every one of us has in common, we are all getting older. There is nothing that we can do about our chronological age (the number of years we have lived) but much that can be done to improve our functional age (how well we are and our ability to enjoy life to the full as we age).
As well as the many benefits that come with age there can be some down sides, one of which being the loss of muscle tissue, particularly the main muscle groups of the lower body, which over time, not only effects our ability to balance but also reduces functional fitness which is what is needed to maintain an independent lifestyle, enabling us to get out of the chair (and up from the floor!) with ease, walk up stairs and maintain an upright posture enabling us to continue to live to the full. At any age, inactive lifestyles have been shown to be associated with a decline in functional capacity which is even more marked in older, inactive people. The old adage is very true ‘Use it or lose it’!
The Magic of Movement is a unique exercise programme designed for the older adult who is aware that their loss of balance and muscular strength is starting to affect their posture and functional fitness.
Incorporating the The Otago home based Strength and Balance Programme (an evidence based programme designed at the University of Otago Medical School in New Zealand specifically to prevent falls) clients will be given the skills and knowledge to perform specific exercises at home in order to improve balance. In the weekly classes there is a blend of Otago exercises as well as upper body resistance training with small equipment, core exercises (incorporating mat Pilates) and stretching.
If you are serious about improving your functional fitness and are keen to learn about how you can improve your posture, balance and strength then why not give it a try to see if this is the class for you! Please be aware that in order to get to the studio there is a set of stairs to climb so you must be able to manage the stairs and once there….it could be your first step to a stronger you!!
Class – Thursday afternoons – 3.15-4.30 (1hr 15mins)
Classes are limited to 6 clients max to enable client-focused sessions. All equipment is provided but clients will be required to purchase either a 1kg or a 500g ankle weight (at a cost of £3 or £2.75 respectively – in cash, payable to Vickie) at their first class. These are required for home practise sessions between classes (ankle weights will available on loan at taster classes). Please wear loose, comfortable layered clothing in which you can easily move.
Classes are booked in blocks of 4 regular weekly sessions, at the same time slot each week at £14/class (£56) or blocks of 6 at £12/class (£72). Payment for all classes to be made in full at the time of booking and there are no refunds or substitute sessions for classes missed.
Depending on availability we can also offer:
- One-off taster sessions at just £10/class for those clients who wish to try a class before committing to a course.
- Ad-hoc sessions for clients who have already completed at least one 4-week course may be available, charged at £16/class
These taster and ad-hoc classes can only be booked in the week prior to the class and are dependent on availability.
All clients must complete and submit a health questionnaire before attending their first class. These are downloadable here or available from reception at the practice. Please complete the questionnaire and bring it to your first class.
