Fear or Phobia? 21-27 Oct 2013 – Face your Fears Week

Are you suffering with a fear or a phobia? Not everyone realizes that there is a difference.

fear.of.flyingLet us look at flying in an aeroplane as an example.

Many people will suffer with their ‘nerves’ for several days before their journey. On arrival at the airport they become more anxious, perhaps they even have to visit the bar for a couple of drinks before boarding the aeroplane. On the plane they have to close their eyes during the take off, but once in the air they relax until just before landing, when the anxiety starts to mount once again.

This person is suffering from a FEAR.  The anxiety is explainable because they will be flying in a metal tube, five miles up in the air, however, they are still able to board the aeroplane.

A fear like this can be treated with suggestion therapy. This would mean one or perhaps two sessions only. Time would be spent rationalizing the persons feelings and then post-hypnotic suggestions would be given to change their behaviour pattern.

The person who has a PHOBIA would not even consider flying in the first place. I have worked with people who would suffer a nervous sweat if they just see the word, airport.  A famous footballer who played for Arsenal FC would not fly with the team, he had to travel by road or sea. This sort of behaviour is irrational.

A phobia is an ‘irrational fear’. The person knows it is silly but something within them says ‘what if’?

What if that spider could hurt me?

………..What if that frog were to touch me?

………………….What if the plane crashes?

The list goes on. There are actually hundreds of phobias. If you are suffering with an irrational fear, the chances are that there is a name for it!

An irrational fear will not respond to suggestion therapy. No matter how hard you try that person cannot rationalize or reason a phobia. The only way to fully resolve irrational behaviour is to use analytical therapy. This type of therapy will get to the root cause of the problem. Most people take six to eight sessions to complete analytical therapy. A short time really to put them back to the position they would have been before fate intervened.
