Osteopathy
Osteopathy is a modern healthcare profession that is evidence-based and widely recommended. Treatment combines two of the oldest forms of medicine known to man..massage and manipulation.

It is often thought that osteopaths only treat backs. In fact, we can deal with a very broad range of problems; from twisted ankles to trapped nerves, headaches to hip pain! Treatment can be tailored to suit people of all ages and states of health and can be effective whether the problem occurred yesterday or has been troublesome for years.
Our hands-on techniques stretch and decongest the soft tissues, increase circulation and improve joint mobility, helping to reduce pain and stiffness. Improved biomechanics enhances overall health and vitality creating an environment in which the body has a real chance to heal.
Osteopathy is very much a partnership between patient and practitioner. Whilst we try to give an indication of the number of sessions needed, this does depend on the nature of your condition, how severe it is, how long you’ve had it and your physical response to the treatment. It is also greatly influenced by how much of your osteopaths advice you choose to follow!
There is much truth in the adage ‘Prevention is better than cure’, and in order to minimise the chance of a condition recurring or to keep chronic problems at bay, many patients choose to attend at 3-6 month intervals for preventive treatment.
- At your first visit, it is vital to establish that osteopathy will be safe and appropriate for you and to check for any signs of other medical conditions. We take a detailed case history and consider your complaint in the context of your whole body. By observing posture, movements and muscle balance, coupled with some simple clinical tests, we can make a provisional diagnosis, explain why it has happened and outline our proposed treatment plan.
- Treatment is usually soothing but may be somewhat uncomfortable if an area is tense or inflamed. It is not uncommon to feel tired afterwards and you may feel more sore or stiff for a day or so.
- Your consent will be sought at each stage but if you are concerned about anything it is important to talk to your osteopath. Due to the nature of our work, patients usually need to partially undress. We aim to respect your privacy and dignity at all times and you are welcome to bring a companion if you wish.
Most of our patients self-refer as a result of personal recommendation. GP referrals are welcome but by no means essential. If you intend to reclaim your fees, please check with your insurance company regarding any restrictions or referral requirements.
